Conservation of the Balkan chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica), the symbol of Rila National Park, by Public Awareness Rising and Promotion of Eco Tourism Development

Rila National Park is one of the best shelters for the Wild Goat (Rupicapra rupicapra bal?anica). It is a threatened species under the Bulgarian, EU and the international legislation. The wild goat is one of the symbols of the Bulgarian mountain nature and it is not a coincidence that it is the emblem of Rila NP.

The main goals of the project are:
Preservation of the Wild Goat populations and rising the public awareness in support of it as well as development of specialized tourist products;
Creation of livelihood opportunities based on the well preserved natural heritage.

Project activities:
Development of an eco-trail “Rila National Park – home of the chamois”. Collection of data base necessary for the interpretation of the species in the Park;
Development of information and educational materials for the chamois population in Rila NP – leaflet and guides handbook;
Development and conduct of a guides training program for the local people and Park staff;
Public information campaign and dissemination of results in all municipalities around Rila NP.
